Idaho Health Care For All_________ P.O. Box 44214, Boise, Idaho 83704-0777 www.idahohealthcareforall.org
4 October 2007
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Thank you for your on-going support of Idaho Health Care for All (IHCFA), the Idaho chapter of Physicians for a National Health Plan (PNHP). We continue to meet quarterly as a group and encourage participation in community events which support our cause: securing universal health care coverage in Idaho. For those unable to attend, our recent membership meetings have focused on a Colorado Bill to secure Single payer coverage in Colorado which will be introduced next year to their legislators. We focused on small business owners at our most recent meeting as they have a strong interest in this issue and had a discussion about their vital role in moving legislation forward in Idaho.
During the first half of this year we met with Legislators on two different occasions to present the system failures in health care and introduce the bill from Colorado as a solution. It was well received by Senators from both sides of the aisle who see this emerging as a priority. We have worked in the IMA to get support from physicians, who have been divided on the issue for some time. The IMA mtg. In Couer D'Alaine featured Dr. Rocky White who spoke formally and informally to doctors in attendance. In addition, our last general membership meeting in Boise on July 23rd allowed Dr. Rocky White to speak on the progress made thus far on this issue and what we can do next. We had a bơth at the Hyde Park Fair in Boise during which we were able to talk to a number of people, many of whom work in Health Care, who were symathetic or supportve to our cause. Currently, Dr. Bill Woodhouse is working to rally support in Southeastern Idaho with meetings there. He can be contacted via the Family Medicine Residency program at ISU. We would welcome outreach efforts in a similar fashion in other areas of the state if anyone is interested in organizing this.
Our final membership meeting this year will be in Boise at 7pm 225 N 16th St. on October 17th. This meeting features Professor Ross Burkhart who will speak on the Canadian Health system and compare it to ours. In addition we will introduce a program to allow individuals to hold gatherings in the home and show a video by former Governor John Kitzhaber of Oregon which would foster a personalized discussion on how to get to Universal access in this country.
We have a website at http://www.idahohealthcareforall.org and you are welcome to contact Janet Shackleford to post articles of interest there. We hope you will sign-up for our email list to receive timely information on events. Please update the accompanying information sheet and return it if you want to stay involved. We also encourage you, if you haven't already, to send in your tax-deductible $25 membership donation to help us get the word out.
Our sincere thanks,
Michael Foutz, MD, Co-Chair Idaho Health Care For All
